Change of Plans
Skip came home early so I could get some rest, and I spent most of the afternoon in bed. You know, “relaxing”.
My RE’s office called me back at the end of the day to see how I was doing and offered more reassurance that everything is most likely fine. The nurse said if I was 6 weeks, they’d do the ultrasound, but it was just a little too early for their equipment.
My OB, whose nurse refused to let me come in, was not entirely on my shit list until after I talked to the RE. You see, I blamed the nurse for not talking to the OB and was giving the benefit of the doubt that my OB, who delivered Calista, would have more compassion if I could actually talk to him. Well, the nurse from the RE’s office said she called them and they told her the same thing — that they would not see me. After hearing that the OB’s office told another doctor’s office — one that was recommending an ultrasound — that they still would not see me, Skip and I decided it’s time for a new doctor.
It turns out the the nurse practitioner who did our IUI’s is also a CNMW (certified nurse midwife). She’s also a satellite office for a large infertility clinic in Seattle (Seattle Reproductive Medicine) and has been through four IVFs herself. I did get a little disillusioned with her at the end of our relationship because her office failed to tell me I needed a cycle day three test before we could move forward with IVF (they waited until day five to tell us, so we lost another month) but other than that, she really was great. I could call her at home or on her cell and I could actually speak to her.
When Skip reminded me that she did pregnancy as well as infertility stuff, I checked out her website. She has a page on ultrasounds in pregnancy and it even says how you can see the gestational sac as early 4.5 weeks and a fetal pole by five weeks, so it seems she supports early ultrasounds, too. She doesn’t appear to actually deliver babies, though, her web site says “early pregnancy care through 5 months” and also “OB referrals”. Bu at this point, anyone with some compassion and understanding to care for us in the early days works for me.
The nurse at the RE said that she will be happy to call the new care provider for us tomorrow if we have any problems getting an ultrasound, but I don’t think it will be near the catastrophe it was today trying to be seen. I will update when I know more.
The spotting/bleeding seems to have slowed since I took a nap, so that’s good news, too. The RE keeps saying that 85 – 90% of the time, it really is nothing. I am holding on to that in hopes that they are right, and just hope that this other provider will do the ultrasound for our peace of mind, if nothing else. I’m sure she’ll call me back pretty early — she always did in the past if I was worried about anything.
