24 Weeks 2 Days — Viability
I reached 24 weeks on Friday, which means that the boys are now viable should they be born. The survival rate at 24 weeks ranges from 30-70% and of course we don’t want them born anytime soon, but just knowing we’ve reached that goal is a good feeling. In another 4 weeks — 28 weeks — the survival rate goes all the way up to 90%!
I just weighed myself, and I can’t believe I weigh 126 pounds! Before I was pregnant, I was 106 pounds, so I made it to 20 pounds by 24 weeks! Considering that (1) I only gained 21 pounds total with Calista and (2) I’ve been struggling to keep food in me, I think it’s great. The goal set in the Dr. Barbara Luke book, When You’re Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads is 24 pounds by 24 weeks and I can’t believe how close I got, especially since I thought I’d never get close. I guess those nasty Ensure milkshakes and spoonfuls of peanut butter are helping. (I did get a new blender, by the way. A 14-speed Osterizer on sale at Wal-Mart. Yay!)
We got our appointment with the peri, and it will be in a little over a week on September 11th. We have an appointment with a genetics counselor first (12:30 pm), then a 2 hour ultrasound (1:30 pm), and then the peri appointment (3:30 pm). Add in the 2 hour drive each way, and it’s going to be a long day. I am excited to be seen and hopefully get some reassuring answers.
Yesterday, we went to Home Depot and got paint for the nursery. It’s “Utah Sky” blue. We’re going to paint the walls and the ceiling. On the ceiling, we’ll stamp some yellow stars and then sponge on some clouds. Ok, I keep saying “we” but really, it will be Skip doing most of the work. Ha ha. Anyhow, If you know how to sponge clouds on a ceiling, feel free to let me know. I haven’t had a chance to look that up yet.
Then I hope to get these from WallWords.com. They are self-stick and a matte metallic gold to go with the gold in the bedding. These would be for above each of their cribs:

And then this for one of the walls:

A third wall is all closet, so there won’t be anything there, and the fourth wall has a big window and just a small space of wall next to that, so I was thinking of getting a double frame to put their ultrasounds in for that wall, unless I find some cute print or something in the meantime.
Is the font too girly, though? Skip has been tormenting me about not being “manly” enough so I’m all paranoid about it. Ugh. I told him I’m not putting “Go Canucks!” on their wall while they are babies for pete’s sake.
Ooooooh, a new store opened in town yesterday. It’s called Along Comes a Baby. It’s super exciting because we have no baby stores around here. Just Target, Wal-Mart and the like. No Babies R Us or anything good like that, so it’s really hard to buy stuff when you have to rely on pictures and descriptions online. We went yesterday for the first day and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that store! It’s great, because it’s a small crunchy-meets-haute kind of place. It’s not your normal Graco, Evenflo and Gerber stuff. It’s Britax, Sunshine Kids, slings, cloth diapers, lots of breastfeeding stuff, etc. Very, very cool. I was most excited because they carry the brand cloth diapers I want — Bum Genius — so I was able to register for them and a few other things I haven’t been able to put on my Target registry. It was great to get to check out the diapers and stuff, and the XS ones are so small and so cute I actually carried one around for a while. Can we say, “Big Dork”? Anyhow, their grand opening sale is September 21-22 and she said everything — including the cloth diapers (!) will be on sale, so I’ll be going back then for sure. And she said out of town friends/family can call the store and buy off my registry, so I better pass the store info on to mom. He he.
Anyhow, that’s that. Last, but not least, the belly. Oh, how it grows!

Woah!

CONGRATS! I bet you are so relieved that you have reached 24 wks! I love the boys names and I don’t think the font looks “girly”. Can’t wait to see pictures of the nursery. I think you look beautiful with your belly. Keep strong and your boys will be in your arms soon!
Sommer,
I am so happy to read your latest update.
The boys’ room sounds so nice. :)
I hope you will post pictures of it when you (Skip, lol) has finished it.
Color me envious that you have that great store.
I live in central WA, farming central, and there is nothing like that here.
You look great!
You look great! Don’t forget to post your fundus measurements. It is fun to keep track of that. :-D
I am happy to see that your “all blue” belly keeps growing!!… Keep getting those milkshakes if they are helping and I am sure that by the next milestone at 28 weeks you will be just fine.
I love the font, and it doesn’t look girly to me but maybe we need the opinion of more boys so it is a “fair” poll for Skip!
I hope this week flies so you can have reassurance with the peri’s appointment next week.
Yeah!!! Gooo babies!
Love the names – keep up the good work of drinking those nasty shakes!! It’s worth it in the end!
I love bumgenius they are a fantastic diaper. Are you using the one size or pocket diaper sized version?
They are so easy to clean and use, you will love them.
Sommer,
My last baby had the white spot on her heart, and the tech pointed it out and said “It used to be a marker for Downs, and now it’s not” So I thought, why did you tell me!!??
I worried because I’ve had heart issues.
She is three now, and perfectly fine…there has never been an issue.
Just thought I’d give you a personal story that ended positive :)
Best of luck!
Yay for reaching 24 weeks! You look great! Those newborn dipes are so tiny and adorable, I know exactly what you mean.
