Mother’s Day 2008
Yesterday was Mother’s Day. We were in Victoria, BC that day, and I was greeted with a card Calista made on some wrapping paper she found in the suite. Then, I was treated to breakfast — which was Cinnamon Toast Crunch with rice milk and a bagel with jam, since we didn’t have much food on our last day there — and a bouquet of mini roses, trimmed from the faux flowers on the table in the kitchen. It was very cute.
We had been in Victoria staying at Skip’s parents’ house there, and were on our way home Sunday. On the way, Skip treated me to a walk through Butchart Gardens. I’ve always wanted to go there, but never had. We were a little shocked at the $25 per adult price tag (ouch!) but it was well worth it. We spent hours there, enjoying the different gardens and taking lots of pictures. Here is one of many I’ve posted on our family web site:
There are many more in this post on our web site.
The trip to Victoria was a result of some work I had to do in Seattle on Thursday. I had to be at a meeting at 7 am in Seattle, so the client paid for a hotel for me (instead of my having to leave home at 5 am to be there). Since I was going to have a room, Skip decided to take off work Thursday and we’d all go together. Then he decided he could just take off Friday, too, and we could make a weekend of it. So, Wednesday night we drove down to Seattle.
I went to the meeting in the morning, and afterwards, we had breakfast at the hotel, then took the kids on the monorail and to the Children’s Museum. Calista had a lot of fun at the museum, pretending to serve up meals in the stores (one of her current favorite games to play) and making a sculpture out of scraps of different materials in the craft room. There’s pictures of that trip on our family blog, too.
We headed home Thursday evening, then left again Friday morning, this time for Victoria. In Victoria, we went swimming, visited the park and the petting zoo, fed the ducks and geese, and then visited Butchart Gardens.
It was a really great weekend, and for as much as we did, the boys handled it really well. The bad part is that we had to come home and back to reality, which I now realize is way too busy and stressful.
Having the time off was so good and so very needed, but I wish it could have lasted longer. Today it was back to trying to work while the boys refused to nap, trying to keep up with the house (ha!) and just the general insanity that goes on here on a daily basis.
I decided it is time to find a nanny, so I posted a listing at the local university. We can’t afford a nanny by a long shot, but I figured a college student 2 days a week for 3 hours a day would be a start to getting back on track with work, and once I get back on track and making more money, I could afford more nanny hours.
It sucks because I work from home to be with my children, but I can’t get any work done at all any more. At least the nanny will be here when I am home, so I can nurse them or play with them when I’m needed.
It’s already 12:30 am and I still have work to do. Oh how I miss this past week-end’s mini-vacation… going to bed early, no responsibilities other than the children… *sigh*
