Felt Food

I’m slowly working my way through answering the post requests made in the comments on January 20th.  Today’s topic?  Felt food.

I know what you’re thinking right about now… What is felt food? I hope you’re not expecting anything really mind-boggling because felt food is food made out of felt.  And what do you do with it?  You play with it!  Or, in my case, Calista plays with it.

I had never heard of it myself until just a few weeks ago, when someone posted on Connected Moms asking if anyone had tried to make any.  When I saw pictures of these great little playthings, I just had to give it a try!  Felt is cheap (about $0.29 per sheet at Michael’s craft store) and I can sew, so it seemed a great little hobby (because, after all, I have so much free time and nothing better to do than sew little felt morsels).

I started easy by making fortune cookies.  Et voila!

Next up was to be a banana.  I had found some free online instructions to make one, but there was no pattern and I didn’t feel confident enough to try it freehand.  I decided to get a pattern from umecrafts’ etsy store, which, ironically, I think is the author of the online tutorial I had found.  Anyhow, I chose her patterns because her creations are amazing ad she has a buy 5 get 1 free promo going on.  I got patterns for sandwiches, cakes, doughnuts, fruit, veggies and a burger combo with fries and a drink.

I tried the banana pattern last night.  I did this one by hand (the fortune cookies were machine-stitched) and it turned out kind of blech.  Our nanny, K, saw it and thought it was great, and Calista was so excited about it.  She said, “You did a great job, Mommy!” when I gave it to her.  :)

Here was banana round one:

I wasn’t exactly pleased with the results, so I gave it another go tonight, and used my sewing machine.  MUCH better!

Next up will be apples and oranges, I think.  I need to get more felt.  And Calista has asked that once I’ve made everything, if I can make her two “menus” with everything I’ve made listed so she can run a restaurant.  :)

  1. How cute! You did a great job. How sweet that she wants to run a restaurant. I remember doing that – getting out the typewriter and typing a menu and everything. Fun!
