Friends are an Amazing Gift

I’ve been sick for the past two weeks with some insane chest congestion that has now migrated to my head and keeps me from breathing through my nose.  I absolutely hate that feeling and can’t sleep when I get that way.  The rest of my family is sleeping, so I wanted to take this time to post an update.

First, I got my letter from DVR about my appointment.  It’s set for October 18 and that is when they will review my case and see if they can or will help me.  I’m not holding my breath, but am hopeful.  We will see what they have to say.

I never heard back anything from the Lions Club, not even an acknowledgment that they received my application and letter.

I’ve made a bit of money towards my hearing aid funds by selling items I’ve sewn, and if you haven’t seen my work, I have a site at http://www.CallieJosCloset.com.  It’s a sewing blog and the shop link there will take you to my Facebook fan page/storefront.  I’ve been working on these adorable 6-pocket, reversible tote bags to add to the store and I can’t wait to list them!  I want one for myself.  :)

I also started a “FundRazr” on my Facebook page which allows for donations.  You can find it here.  It wouldn’t let e make my goal the full amount I am trying for ($3,600) so I did it for half the cost.

Slowly, I’ve been getting there.  Christmas has seemed a lofty goal.  Imagine my surprise, however, when yesterday, I received a letter in the mail and an anonymous donation to my funds in the amount of $1,800.  I was shocked.

I know who the donation is from, but they wish to remain anonymous.  The donor is an old friend who revealed to me that they, too, have hearing loss, but aren’t ready to face it.  I cried as I read the letter explaining to me what my friend has been through, and the pain, aggravation and embarrassment they’ve suffered through the years.  It was very, very touching and the contribution is unbelievable.

I am going to hold on to that until I go through the DVR process in case they will cover the cost for me.  Otherwise, I have the down payment I need to order the hearing aids.  Incredible.

And now, I am on an additional mission to help my friend.  I plan to keep blogging once I get the hearing aids, the process of getting used to them and getting them adjusted and how they (hopefully) change my life.  I want to inspire my friend to seek the help they need, and hopefully help change their life.

Friends truly are an amazing gift.

  1. What a WONDERFUL friend! You are blessed, Sommer, and I know you’ll keep your end of the “deal” by encouraging that person to get the help s/he needs. Keep up the great work!

  2. Hey Sommer,

It’s been a long time and I did not realize you were going through hearing loss. I will be interested to follow your hearing aid journey because William wears them but I can’t ask my 13 month old to tell me what it’s like. So maybe you can help me? He has moderate/severe loss in both ears.

    xo Keep strong.

    Shawn

    1. Hi, Shawn! Thanks for the message. How did you know William needed hearing aids so early? How does he do with them? Does he have in the canal or behind the ear? I’m guessing little ones wear them behind the ears. I’ll send you an email. :)
