Just One More…

…or perhaps two.

Bittersweet

We got word today that Ace is being evicted from the Special Care Nursery.  Basically, he’s fine now, and insurance doesn’t care to pay for a baby who doesn’t need care.  Of course, this is great news, because it means he’s coming home tomorrow, but it’s sad because Nate isn’t. (Read on …)

Setbacks SUCK

Filed under: Adventures in the NICU — Sommer at 11:09 am on Thursday, November 15, 2007

If I could write the word SUCK bigger in the title of this post, I would.

I was at the hospital last night for the boys’ 11 pm and 12 am feeds.  Nate was sleepy, but he took 30 cc by breast and the rest by bottle.  While I was feeding Ace, Nate started to desat a little bit, which means his blood oxygen level was dropping below 90. (Read on …)

Sooner Than I Thought

When I got to the hospital last night to feed the boys, the doctor told me Ace had pulled out his nasogastric tube (NG tube, the tube that goes through his nose down to his belly and how he’s taken most of his feedings) and that they decided not to put it back in.  He had been taking his feeds by bottle since pulling out the tube.  Then he told me Nate followed suit and pulled his out and was also taking bottles! It’s About to Get Interesting…

Filed under: Adventures in the NICU — Sommer at 6:38 pm on Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Well, we’ve just been working on the feeding by mouth thing with the boys and they are improving. Ace took a full feed by breast yesterday, and Nate took one partially by breast and finished with a bottle. Today, the nurses asked if I can come in for more feedings, which is a step forward! Twice Blessed

I was just uploading some pictures we took today to our family web site at http://www.cronck.com and was thinking about how lucky we are to have not one but two beautiful, healthy babies.  I can’t wait to have them home. (Read on …)

The Wall

Filed under: Adventures in the NICU — Sommer at 11:23 am on Thursday, November 8, 2007

I feel like we’ve hit a wall in our progress.  Ace and Nate are doing awesome — all they have left to do before they can come home is to take all feedings by mouth.  They are slowly increasing their intake, but I feel like it’s going to take a long time to get where they need to be.  They generally take about 16-18 cc per feed, and their total feeds are 34 cc (Ace) and 45 cc (Nate).  They have a ways to go. Day 17: No More Isolettes

Filed under: Adventures in the NICU — Sommer at 10:26 pm on Monday, November 5, 2007

Today is day 17 since the boys were born. We thought it would be a few days before Ace was ready to move out of the isolette and to a crib, but he gained all but 2 ounces he needed to meet the doctor’s goal weight, so the doctor let him move today. I haven’t seen them together in their crib, but Skip is there now, and I made him take the camera. I can’t wait to see them together in their bed. (Read on …)

Days 15 & 16: Pumping and Fatigue

Filed under: Adventures in the NICU — Sommer at 9:32 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2007

I didn’t feel like updating yesterday because the fatigue has finally set in and I’m exhausted by the time Calista is in bed.  I have been pumping breast milk eight to ten times a day and nursing the boys two to three times a day, so four to six nursing sessions a day.  It’s very tiring, seeing as I have to pump or nurse every two hours to fit it all in a day.
