The Number

I went for my blood draw at 8:15 am this morning then took Calista to the dentist and then preschool. I knew I could have signed a waiver at the blood draw to the get the results direct from the lab myself, but I decided I waited this long, I could be patient.

Fast forward two hours when I knew the lab results were ready and my patience was GONE! I tried calling the lab, but no waiver means no results. I contemplated driving 1/2 hour back to the lab to sign the waiver and get my results, but I figured if I did that, I’d get the call while I was on the way and didn’t want to waste my $3+ per gallon gas.

I checked my cell phone (the number they were going to call) every 5 minutes or so to be sure it was turned on, had a signal, and there were no messages… I hadn’t done a lick of work and just kept waiting. Finally, I decided a nap might get them to call me.

I laid down and got a good 45 minute nap and the phone FINALLY rang. It was the same nurse I’d been talking to and trying to get my Beta moved up, and the first thing she asked was if I did a home test. Ha! I said yes, so she congratulated me and gave me the number, told me to go ahead and stop the Estrogen patches (thank goodness, my belly is covered in a rash from them), stop the baby aspirin, continue the Progesterone shots (yuck) and call my OB to schedule the ultrasound!

I called the OB ASAP, but just missed them — they are out to lunch. Gah!

Anyhow, the number still leaves us in limbo. It’s 600 (even!). At 17 dpo, BetaBase.info shows the median singleton pregnancy beta to be 357 (http://www.betabase.info/showBasicChart.php?type=Single) and the median twin pregnancy beta to be 602 (http://www.betabase.info/showBasicChart.php?type=Multiple). However, at 17 dpo with Calista, my beta was 683 (and twins was mentioned as a possibility in early pregnancy with her), but they also say IVF betas tend to be lower than traditional pregnancies so at the end of all of this rambling… we still have no idea if it’s more likely to be one or two. Whenever my OB calls back, I will have an ultrasound date, though and will be that much closer to finding out!

  1. Congratulations Sommer! Now, I can’t wait for the ultrasound to see if it’s one or two! I am thrilled for you, Skip, and Callista!

  2. Congrats again Sommer. At 14dpo my HCG was 546 and I only had Avery in there so I think it is hard to tell based on the number.

  3. Great number! Will they do a follow-up hCG??? It’s always nice to see those numbers going up…

    More congratulations!

  4. Hi,
Been following your story and I’m so happy to see that your 2nd IVF was positive!!

I guess you really can’t count twins out yet…I got lucky on my 2nd IVF as well and had twins. My beta at 16dpo (or 13dp3dt) was 290 so your beta is definately a nice strong number!

Congratulations to you and all the best whether it’s one or two!!!

  15. Congratulations! I agree, can’t tell much by numbers (unless the doubling rate is huge) especially since with my three my betas ALWAYS started high but I only had one each time. I’m still thinking it’s two for you though. ;)

  16. That is a fabulous number Sommer – congratulations I’m a bit late to the festivities, but I have my fingers crossed for you :D Again congrats!
