Days 12 & 13: The Boys are Back in Town!

Yesterday was a busy day so I didn’t really have a chance to update. The boys were transported back to Bellingham yesterday — on my 30th birthday! Skip was just recently harassing me for not being able to keep a secret, so I decided to let him think the boys would be back by Friday and not tell him they were coming early.

They had these bubble gum “It’s a Boy!” cigars at the gift shop in Seattle that Skip had wanted to get, but he forgot to. I told him I’d get them for him to hand out when the boys got back to Bellingham. What I did was got the box of bubble gum cigars and balloon bouquet that had two “It’s a Boy!” balloons in it. I got a little card and wrote:

They boys are back in town!
I CAN keep a secret.
Wanna go see them?

My mom and I were up on the stairs at the front desk of his work with cameras so he couldn’t see us. They called him up front and he said, “Oh, she must have sent these…” and started to walk away. The receptionist said, “Isn’t there a card?” and Skip said, “Cards are for girls!” and set the cigars back down to open it.

We watched him read it a few times and then he said, “Huh?” My mom and I started to laugh and then got him to look up. He was surprised, and it was probably the first time I have ever successfully surprised him. I was so proud of myself! We headed up to the hospital to see Ace and Nate.

Skip’s Surprise

Skip visited for his lunch break and then had to go back to work, and I stayed a few hours with my mom and held them. Then we surprised Calista at school and headed home for dinner.

I went back this morning and was at the nursery from 8 am to 1 pm. I fed Nate and Ace each twice. At Ace’s first breastfeeding, he took a whopping 20 cc (his full feed is 34 cc). Nate didn’t really take anything, he just nuzzled and slept. :)

At their second feed, Nate took 8 cc — his first measurable intake of breast milk from the breast (go Nate!) — and Ace took 16 cc. They are starting to get it!

They are also being weaned from their isolettes and are in little clothes as the nurses slowly turn down the temperature and see how the boys do maintaining their body temps on their own. Soon they will be in a crib together, and I’m very excited for that.

Skip stopped by to see the boys on his lunch hour and will go back this evening. It’s going to be nice having them so close to home.
